General Information
Addiction counseling graduates provide much-needed substance abuse and addiction treatment to individuals and families experiencing problems with alcohol, drugs, gambling, or other addictions. Prevention and treatment of substance abuse and addictions is a challenging and specialized profession that is expected to grow twice as fast as any other occupation in the next decade. By joining this profession you will help people return to healthy and productive lives.

Addiction Counseling Major Admission Criteria
A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for courses taken within social work and an overall GPA of 2.00 is required.
The criteria for acceptance into the addiction counseling major include the submission of the appropriate application for admission including a copy of the Grad Audit and an essay which would include: a description of your personal characteristics that should contribute to your success in this field and your personal characteristics that may hinder your success, a list of activities you have participated in at U-Mary and/or your recent volunteer work/employment, a description of the most influential factors leading to your decision to enter this profession, and a description of your expectations of a career in your chosen field. Students are required to submit references from three U-Mary faculty or staff.
Acceptance to U-Mary does not automatically qualify a student to pursue a major in addiction counseling. All students must submit a written application for admission in to addiction counseling to Jim Renner, program director of Addiction Counseling, according to the following deadlines:
- Second Semester Students - February 15
- Transfer Students (junior or senior) - October 1 - Fall Semester Only
- Others - within three weeks of first semester at U-Mary as a junior or senior transfer student.
